Firstly many
thanks to our hosts SBP Intergrasi Gombak for holding the under Secondly thanks to our boys for turning out and putting in a great effort for four games running from the morning through the midday heat. Match results for the round robin followed by 1st v 2nd and 3rd v 4th play-offs were as follows: InterGomb A
v InterGomb B 34 - 0 3rd v 4th InterGomb B v Teknik Gombak Won by InterGomb B 1st v 2nd BRC v InterGomb A 19/12 Man of tournament for BRC was Daniel Pike - 7 tries with 3 run aways - totaling 150 metres. The team responded well under pressure, support play was exceptional and line outs were dominant with lots of wins against the throw. We look forward
to playing against these schools again, with the under 14s hopefully heading
there 5 Jul for a warm up game ahead of the SM Sains Selangor 10's on

June 08 May and June saw BRC travel down to Singapore twice. First we went to defend the Straits Cup against Tanglin RC with boys teams at under 9, under 10, under 11, under 12 & under 13 and girls teams at under 12 & under 16. Another great day was put on by the hosts and everyone enjoyed it. The rugby was great and the cup a much closer run thing this time. Results: Under 9 Lost 3 Under 10 Won 2 Drew 1 Under 11 Lost 3 Under 12 Won 3 Under 13 Won 2 G Under 12 Won 2 Lost 1 G Under 16 Won 1 Lost 2 Over all BRC retain the cup! Well done to all players. The next staging of the Straits Cup will be in KL September 20 when a BBQ and quiz will be added to carry the fun on in to the evening. The second trip was to take part in the Summer Cups hosted by Centaurs RFC at under 10 and under 12 with a very young squad of mainly under 13 players traveling down to play in a triangular with Dubai Exiles and Centaurs RFC. The two younger teams both started well with 2 wins out of 2 in the pool but before the final pool games could be played in came a nasty electrical storm and the event had to be cancelled for safety. A real shame as we had high hopes of adding two cups to the trophy cabinet that is being built at Out of Africa. Next time! As expected the older boys were in for a tough time, but despite losing both games the boys will have learnt from the experience and some take away positives from their performances. Some highlights can be found at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xW28hGZhbRE Through both tours, the usual excellent behaviour was evident. Thank you all for that! It means the coaches are as always happy to take you away on more tours. The next matches 11 June versus Raffles (under 14), 14 June versus Intergrasi School Gombak (under 16) & 21 June versus Sekolah Datuk Abdul Razak (under 14 and under 17). Supporters welcome to all! |

Muda 7's - Johor Bahru BRC traveled down to JB on 11 April with a small and young squad for this inaugural event at under 15. It was a new form of rugby for us and the boys had only two sessions to prepare, plus we were unfortunately hit by a couple of late injury withdrawals (we hope these guys will be fit soon and can travel to JB for the next one) which reduced the average age of the squad even more but it was going to be fun - and hard work! We were drawn in pool A which proved to be a tough one with the losing cup finalists coming from the group along with a team that went on to do well in the Plate after losing to the eventual Cup winners. First up we beat English College JB 15-5 only conceding a last minute break away try run in from their try line where we were attacking - Can't afford to give away the ball / miss a tackle any where on the pitch in 7's!! Next up was a real test in Singapore Cricket Club B team which contained many players from Anglo Chinese School and was coached by the ACS coach. BRC gifted them the first half conceding 19 unanswered points. The 2nd half was a different matter with the boys waking up and taking it to SCC. We were 5-0 up in the second half until again giving up a last minute try - but the tied 2nd half was something the boys should be proud of - Final score 5-24. If we thought SCC was as tough as it would get, we were wrong! MRSM Pontian (the beaten Cup finalists who would beat SCC A team on the way to the final) were next. Big, fast and skilled they were excellent competition. We lost this one 0-21 with 2 tries in the first half and 1 in the second, but we could take a lot from the game in terms of our defensive work - These guys were putting 40 plus points on some others. The final pool game was SMK Pasir Gudang 2 and was a nail biter in the first half with BRC going behind twice but coming back to level it at 14-14. In the early part of the second half we took control and only another late try brought the scores closer - BRC won 32-21. Four games of two 7 minute halves on a full pitch and the boys took a deserved rest after qualifying for the Bowl. Sunday saw us take on a local JB school SMK Tasek Utara. Two tries up and coasting we conceded one try just to keep the nerves of the coaches on edge but the defense was again strong and we won 12-7 taking us in to the semi-final against another big side in SMK Tun Syed Nasir Ismail A. We managed to get ahead early but an unfortunate turn-over early in the second half saw us leading only 7-5. A blind side break by the opposition saw them take the lead 7-10 soon after the first try, a lead that despite a huge effort and most off the second half being played in their 22 we could not over turn. No silverware but the boys came away with a huge round of applause from the coaches - they ran themselves into the ground and never gave up. A credit to the club, they should all be proud of themselves! Many of them can go back to JB for the next two years in the same age group and will in all likelihood bring home some silverware - something that was not lost on some of our opposition who were very gracious in victory commenting that our boys should not be down as they did very well as a young team! The under 15 event was won by the A team from our local friends SM Sains Selangor and the under 21 event by Bandar Penawar Sports School. Finally we need to say thank you to the organisers of the event Hj. Ibrahim and Nurul Annuar who looked after us excellently and ran a very professional tournament. We'll be happy to go back to JB any time!! |

The clubs first tour to Hong Kong was a great success thanks to the support of the parents and the efforts and behaviour of the boys which was again excellent!
We sent teams at under 12, under 14 and under 16 and all had a young look with some boys eligible to go back to HK for the next 2 years in the same age group. At under 16 we had the additional pressure of only having a ten man squad.
The under 12s started with a tough game against Valley Fort. Our defense was tested throughout the match but we held on for a 0-0 draw. Next two games were easier with wins against Causeway Bay Monkey / Tsuen Wan Rhinos and Flying Kukris, but we didnt score as many tries as Valley and so qualified for the Cup quarter final 2nd in the group leaving us with a real test against our old friends Centaurs. The boys put up a great performance taking it to the opposition from the whistle and playing the vast majority of the game in the Centaurs 22m area. A well deserved 2-0 victory and the reward of a cup semi-final against Rego International of Shanghai.
The semi-final saw BRC again defending well against larger opposition and the record of no tries conceded continued. With two good break-away tries BRC were in the Cup Final to play HKFC. Hit early with a soft try we seemed to lose some heart against the older / stronger HKFC who were extremely well drilled as well and conceded a 5-0 half time lead. Coach Dave rallied the boys at half time and though there was not a fairytale comeback, the boys fought harder and only conceded a couple of tries in the second half. Losing under 12 Cup Finalists is a result our mix of under 10-12 boys should be very proud of!
The under 14s were unfortunately seeded in the lower competition and as a result only had the Bowl to aim for we hope our showing this year as a club will merit the organisors putting us in the top competition next year!
That disappointment over, we went out and won the first two of three pool games against Lion Police Club and East Kowloon / Tai Po Dragons. The inability to finish tries though in the second game would come back to haunt us as going into the last game we had a huge target of 5 converted tries against Twister to qualify for the semi-final due to the strange pool system. The boys put in a huge effort but came away with just 4 tries no mean feat in an 8 minute game! and despite a record of played 3 won 3 with no tries conceded we were out as the competition format had the top two teams from two pools which played against each other going through. Fortunately for us though one of the local teams hadnt read the rules and having a played 3 lost 3 record thought the day was over. BRC took their place and won the semi-final setting up a final against Dulwich College of Shanghai. In a tight fought game we went down by 1 try but again the boys can be happy with their efforts.
For the under 16s there was a tough task ahead in the pool after we were drawn with HKFC which are a very strong team. We played 3, won 2 (versus Tai Po Dragons and Twister) and lost 1 (to HKFC) in the pool which unfortunately saw us placed 5th across all the teams and so entered in the plate as the strongest team. A great semi-final competed by our bare minimum 10 man squad of which some were walking wounded saw a tense game against BKK Lions that went to sudden death extra time. BRC came through with a deserved win and a place in the final. Rumour has it there are some photos of elated coaches jumping higher than thought possible!
Unfortunately as at the BRC 10s wed walk away with no silverware as the boys went down in a tight fought final. Like the other age groups the under 16s should be proud of themselves.
Through contacts made on the Thursday we were lucky to arrange a game for the under 14s against Dulwich Shanghai on Friday afternoon before heading for the 7s. It kept the boys (and coaches) out of trouble and on a horrible pitch was a good exhibition of 12 aside rugby (questions were raised about one coachs decision to play 11 and given them an advantage for most of the first half, but we wont go in to that!). Our 7s tactics in the period we played showed that we have plenty to work on before the Rakan Muda event April 12/13. Dulwich were a great crowd and we hope to see them in KL or arrange a visit to Shanghai before too long.
The coaches would like to thank all the players for their efforts and behaviour you are a pleasure to work and tour with and we would not hesitate to take you all back to HK / else where!! |

The under 14s and under 17s today took on teams from Victoria Institution and came away with good victories. The under 14s had a sqaud of 23 for the 2 x 30 minute 15 aside encounter. The boys adapted well to their first long game. A quick start saw us three tries up early but the boys of VI fought hard and the rate of scoring was reduced. BRC played well throughout (though we need some work on handling and catching high balls!) and dominated coming away 48 v 5 winners. The under 17s also had a big squad out for their 2 x 40 minute match. Another quick start again saw BRC three tries up but again VI stuck to the task and made us fight all the way. In the end BRC again ran out winners 48 v 5. Well done to all the boys. We will arrange re-matches with VI in mid-May and are also trying to schedule the next fixture with SMSS for a Saturday morning in May. Many thanks to our supporters who turned out in numbers and also to our hosts Victoria Institution. |

November 07 Thanks to the players and parents for the on field efforts and support during what was a very busy weekend 3/4 Nov. Thanks also to our new club caterers for providing the food on Saturday - it went down well with players and spectators alike! Saturday saw us host Bedok Primary School from Singapore who brought teams at under 10 and under 11. The weather treated us very well, the rain stopping just before kick off and staying away for the most part until we finished. In preparation for the Manulife 10s tour our under 9 squad took on the Bedok under 10 team and came away with 4 wins out of four. A great effort all round and showing good potential for Singapore - hopefully they'll bring back more silver wear! Our under 10/11 squad started slower losing the first game, but came back well and won the next two. On Sunday we were visited at Equine Park by our good friends from SM Sains Selangor at under 13 and under 15. Our under 13 team played their first ever matches at 15 aside so it was a big learning process, but a good one. All three games were very tight affairs but we managed to edge the day with two wins out of three. The results were 5-0, 0-7 & 7-5. The older boys also playing 15 aside did one better and won three out of three, the last being played over two halves unlike all other games which were one 15 minute period. The results were 14-0, 5-0 & 43-0. SMSS always provide excellent competition and are a team we will always guage our progress against. We thank SMSS for traveling our to see us and look forward to the next matches with them in January after the respective school holidays. They have kindly invited us to their tournament in July next year. Thanks also go to the referees for the weekend, Mike and Kelvin Saturday & Hywel and Andy Sunday - keep up the good work. The next local KL fixtures are planned for Saturday 8 Dec against Blacks RFC of Singapore. Details to follow. |
